The Beauty of a Christmas Tree Topper

by Jam Clanders

Whether you're religious or not, getting ready for Christmas is still one of the most elaborate and difficult tasks of the year. There's theChristmas tree, the nativity scene, indoor and outdoor Christmas lights, antique ornaments passed down in your family, and, of course,Christmas gifts. You also have to deal with all the preparation involved in sending out holiday cards, preparing a fancy holiday meal, and getting your clothes ready for the trip to church. But to me, the most important part is the figure that, both literally and symbolically sits above everything else: the Christmas tree topper.

If following traditional methods your Christmas tree decoration will comprise of lights, garland, trim and ornaments which will be arranged in that order. The Christmas tree would then be adorned with a tree skirt and traditionally topped with a topper such as an angel or star to complete the tree. Lights are probably the most important feature of the Christmas tree and it is worth spending a while choosing them as there are so many varieties available. Make sure you purchase enough lights for the size of tree you have to create a tree that is decorated in a well balanced manner. For trees that are 2-3 feet tall you will need 35 - 80 lights, for trees that are 4 feet high or taller use 100 lights per foot. When dressing your Christmas tree with lights thread them from the base of the tree to the very tip at the top. Exercise caution if stringing lights together as you can easily overload fuses and damage circuits, throw away any lights that are not functioning properly and always turn them off when you leave the house and when you go to bed.

The cost of these tree toppers is not on the higher side and you can find them easily in nearby stores. You might as well make your own tree topper but this is a very time consuming task and would require a lot of effort. While it is true that there is nothing better than homemade decorations, it is also true that manufacturers have come up with some fantastic Christmas decorations this year.

You can also order these decorative items over the internet. You would need to do a little research over the internet in order to find the perfect ornaments for your Christmas tree. A large number of websites offer a variety of Christmas supplies and once you place an order, you would likely get your order in a few working days. This perhaps the reason why manufacturers make huge profits every year in the month of December.

Just make sure that, if your Christmas tree topper is a family heirloom, you are careful when storing it. It might seem like a good idea to let your youngest son be a big boy and climb up on the stepladder with the Christmas star but, when he drops it and breaks it, no one is going to be all that happy about it.
